The Character of Meriwether Lewis : Completely Metamorphosed in the American West
Published in Paperback by Marmarth Press (01 December, 2000)
Average review score:

When you've been to the Missouri, what's left?
"The dark despair that round him blew"This excellent and wonderfully written book celebrates and critically examines the sensitive, lyric, and noble soul of Meriwether Lewis. Clay Jenkinson explores Lewis' psyche from a unique perspective - literally - as a first-person historical interpreter. Profound, humorous, and soulful reflection make this a great read. Jenkinson's knowledge as a Jefferson scholar also enriches the text. Valuable to anyone curious about America's epic. There is also a wealth of information on the author's website.

The best beginners primer on clay I have read. This book is so complete. I have wanted to work in clay for some time but was a bit intimidated by the process. Fun, informative and easy to understand.I found this book packed with inspiration. Explains projects thoroughly and has lots of pictures as well. The projects are cute and fun to make. I think is a great book for a beginner.

Christmas With Clay (Kids Create)
Published in Paperback by Tyndale House Pub (October, 1995)
Average review score:

Wonderful book for make-your-own nativity ornaments! This is a wonderful craft book that helps you make Christmas tree decorations that are really about Christmas: angel, Mary, Joseph, donkey, Bethlehem, baby Jesus in manger, lamb, shepherd, camel, wise men, star, and dove. There are excellent full-color pictures, step-by-step instructions, and patterns for each ornament. There are also hints for working with Sculpey Clay and basic instructions for how to work with the clay, mix colors, form shapes, etc. (I have made these ornaments and everyone loves them. They're easy to make... and they're really very cute.) This great book is out of print, so snap it up!
A wonderful addition to any children's library. GREAT!We have many of Glenda Palmer's highly inspirational books for children. Ms. Palmer has such a way to not, only to teach but to hold the children's interest. My granddaughter loves all of her books and begs to hear them over and over again. That over and over again is a true sign of a wonderful book.
I recommend "any" of Mx. Palmer's books they are all delightful!
Thank You for writing such wonderful books.

Classic Rock Climbs No. 22: Sam's Throne, Arkansas
Published in Paperback by Chockstone Pr (October, 1999)
Average review score:

Ozark climbing at its bestThis book is very informative and easy to read. Gives great route descriptions; and the topos make finding your way around the area and locating the different routes a breeze. This is a "must have" book for climbing in the Sam's Throne area.
Informative and interestingAs climbing becomes more poplular, more guide books are being writen. I have found that most of these books give less than adequate descriptions of the area of interest. This book does not fit this catagory. Instead Clay Frisbee gives very informative route descriptions and provides good topos to add to finding a specific route. His description of the history and specifics of the route also make the book more interesting to read than most climbing guidebooks.

Clay Homes
Published in Hardcover by Woman's Missionary Union (August, 1997)
Average review score:

Clay HomesI have always enjoyed reading this book to my two-year-old. We both enjoy the illustrations and the simple story that says so much! I know that it will be a favorite for years to come!
Great Book Reinforcing Mission Study to younger childrenI teach a missions class for young girls in my church. I found this book, 'Clay Homes', written by Judy Langley and illustrated by Wendy Kikugawa to be simple enough for the children to understand. The large print was easy for my younger students to read, yet the older ones enjoyed reading the story, also. The illustrations by Wendy Kikugawa were colorful and appropriate for the story.

Clay Whistles: The Voice of Clay
Published in Spiral-bound by The Whistle Press (March, 1990)
Average review score:

User friendly and helpfulI was very impressed by this book. I have other books with instructions on making clay whistles and ocarinas, but Janet Moniot's book is the only one I have seen so far with an extensive "problem solving" section, detailing possible problems, and some of the likely symptoms associated with them. For the novice just starting out making clay flutes and whistles, this alone is well worth the cost of the book. Her illustrations are clear and easy to understand, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to produce "playable" clay crafts.
An exellent book on the subjectThis is an exellent source for anyone wanting to learn to make clay whistles or ocarinas. It gives step by step instructions and trouble shooting while constrocting whistles. It also tells how to fabricate tools you will need but can't buy readymade. I purchased this book after I'd learned how to make clay ehistles. I wish I had had this information earlier, I would have been saved several years of muddling around.

Clay: A Studio Handbook
Published in Hardcover by The American Ceramic Society (01 March, 2001)
Average review score:

Perfect studio handbookThis book is wonderful. It contains information on everything from properly wedging and centering clay, to how to set up your own studio and select equipment. It's informative without being so academic that it's hard to read. I would recommend it to anyone who is trying to supplement their knowledge of ceramics. I have more hands-on pottery experience than academic, so this answers all the little things I've been wondering about such as "What is the difference between earthenware and stoneware?", "How does a noborigama work?", or "What is the proper way to photograph my work?" This is the perfect studio reference book.
For anyone with a yearning to create three-dimensional artVince Pitelka's Clay: A Studio Handbook is a comprehensive, highly detailed manual on all the myriad ways to create and enjoy clay sculpture, from hand-building to potter's wheels to kiln firing and glazes, to exhibiting and marketing finished works. Written in sensible language easily understandable to the lay reader or novice hobbyist, yet covering all the material a professional needs to know, Clay: A Studio Handbook is the perfect guide for anyone with an interest in learning or improving their clay craftsmanship, whether for fun or for profit. Black-and-white photographs and drawings visually model the many styles and techniques presented, making them easy to imitate. Clay: A Studio Handbook is strongly recommended for anyone with a yearning to create three-dimensional art.

Confronting Rape and Sexual Assault (Worlds of Women (Cloth), No 3)
Published in Hardcover by Scholarly Resources (December, 1997)
Average review score:

Perfect collection of scholarly essaysThis book is one of the best editted practical collections on rape and sexual assault that I have read. The book is ideal for activists, administrators, survivors, scholars, and anyone else who is interested in rape and sexual assault. I used many of the essays from the book for two completely different research papers. The book contains many great articles on the prevalence of rape on college campuses. It also contains some enlighting essays on rape law and the prevalence of rape myths.
A wonderful resource... makes you think. This book is a compelation of some of the popular and well known studies. Being a rape survivor, i found this book to be very informing, and it really helped me to start processing what had happened. It is divided into sections, the first one being reflections and writings of rape survivors. This is followed by other sections about why rape occurs and what can be done about it. I highly recommend this book, not as an easy, enjoyable read, but as an excellent resource and guide.

Crabtree & Evelyn Fragrant Herbal: Enhancing Your Life with Aromatic Herbs and Essential Oils
Published in Hardcover by Bulfinch Press (May, 1998)
Average review score:

SHEER BEAUTYThis is an absolutely gorgeous book, loaded with pictures that make me want to quit my job and get a greenhouse in the country and grow beautiful herbs and flowers. This book covers a wide range of topics for each aromatic group, ranging from perfumes, to garden designs, to recipes. It is practical as well as it is beautiful. This is one of my favorite garden/herb picture books, in fact it is one of my favorite picture books, period.
Comprehensive & powerful, evoking emotion, memory, inspiration. The English perfumier Crabtree & Evelyn "nose" (knows) about the power of scent. Our reactions to a scent-experience can be powerful; This became apparent one day while sticking my nose into a fully-blown pink cabbage rose. The neurons that sense smell cut straight to the brain, immediately evoking thoughts and feelings related to past experiences. The scent of grandma's lilac soap may stir joy-filled memories experienced during a visit fifteen years ago. Crabtree & Evelyn's Fragrant Herbal is as enjoyable and informative as it is practical. There are recipes for making fragrant soaps and scented products containing essential oils and scented herbs grown in one's own garden. For those who are new to the growing of herbs for personal use, there is an A-Z section on growing and use of herbs. The photographs are of a high quality and display everything from beautifully crafted soaps and bath products to scenes of scented gardens abundant with roses and lavender. The artistic and writing style of this work is quite English, captivating those qualities of Britain found endearing by romantically-minded Americans. A well-done compilation that appeals as much to the heart of a gardener as to the mind seeking everyday uses for the season's bounty, Crabtree & Evelyn's Fragrant Herbal is a learning opportunity for both the seasoned gardener and the amateur maker of scented home and bath items. This comprehensive, powerful work is a tool for improving the quality of life through the use of scent, whether it be in the garden, bath or home.

Creation Out of Clay: The Ceramic Art and Writings of Brother Thomas
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (September, 1999)
Average review score:

a beautiful bookBrother Thomas Bezanson ,originally from Nova Scotia, is one of the great potters working in cermaics today. His work is notable in its use of color, resembling texture and color used in both China and Japan. He works in porcelin, and now lives and works in Erie, Pa.,not a noted hotbed of the arts. He was formely assocaited with the celebrated Monks of Weston Priory in Vermont. His work is easily accesible, and is on display in the Boston museum, among other places. This book, with its luxurious photos show the depth of the color that Brother Thomas achieves, the deep blends that have become his signature .Tea bowls, plates, vases all are lovingly illustated in beautiful full 4 color photographs. In this volume,he shows his deep indebtedness to the japanese and chinese artist who have preceeded him. Also his story is told along with his progress as an artist, and one can see, as a man. This is a beautiful book, lavishly illustarted which tells Br Thomas history along with the history of the pieces. Excellent, worth the cost and effort.
Creation Out of ClayI found this book very enjoyable and uplifting. The writings of Brother Thomas and the photographs of his art work are exceptional. This is a book I recommend to any artist or anyone who enjoys man at his creative best.
The suicide of Meriwether Lewis has always been one of the more tragic and interesting mysteries of American history. Clay Jenkinson, in this book on the character of Lewis, is witty, profound, insightful, and highly readable. We learn about Lewis' interest in food, his views on Indians and women, his longing for an important place in history, his drinking and most importantly, his view of himself. We see the Expedition through the unedited writings of Lewis himself and through Clay Jenkinson's perspective on what those writings reveal.
In the end, we must still speculate about what was in Lewis' heart and head on the night he took his life, but we are left with a much better understanding of the workings of that mind.
